Building a greener future – Spotlight on TMEA
From Türkiye to the Middle East and Africa (TMEA), our teams are turning ideas into action – finding new and practical ways to care for the environment, our birds, and the communities around us.
This spotlight shines on the TMEA region, where creative thinking and local commitment are driving real progress.
South Africa: Building a greener future
In South Africa, the team is laying strong foundations for a more sustainable tomorrow. Waste reduction is another area where the team is making strides. In just one year, they’ve recycled over 300 kilograms of batteries, 2,300 kilograms of plastic and paper, and printer cartridges – keeping 3.4 tons of waste out of landfill. They’ve also swapped out 236 incandescent bulbs for LEDs.
Other practical steps include switching to recycled brown chick boxes and turning 180 to 200 cubes of chicken litter per flock into fertilizer for local farmers. By rethinking delivery routes and using smaller trucks where possible, the South African team cut 238 kilograms of CO₂ emissions and saved 91 litres of diesel each month.
And in the onsite garden tended by and shared among facility employees, the team has grown and shared 111 portions of fresh vegetables like tomatoes, spinach, and lettuce with employees—proof that sustainability can start small and grow big.
They also installed six beehives on the farm 2023, harvesting 30 liters of honey so far, with the potential to produce 150 liters annually. The bees support local biodiversity while contributing to food production.
East Africa: Growing more than chickens
At Aviagen East Africa operations in Tanzania, sustainability is rooted in the land. Since 2024, the Tanzania team’s vegetable garden has produced 500 kilograms (~1,102 pounds) of carrots and 200 kilograms (~441 pounds) of cabbage, all shared among employees.
And with 128 avocado trees planted across two sites in Tanzania and setting up10 bee hives, the team is building a future where farms can feed people in more ways than one. Plans are already in motion to expand these efforts to new sites in the coming year.
Türkiye: Innovating for efficiency
In Türkiye, the team at Anadolu is combining innovation with conservation. Their upgraded water purification system now handles 40 tons while using fewer chemicals and much less water and salt.
Inside the poultry houses, cooling pads have been optimized to regulate temperature and maintain bird comfort. This evaporative system is a smart alternative to air conditioning—using moist pads and exhaust fans to draw in cooled air. It’s not only effective at reducing heat stress, but also supports better air quality and uses less energy.
Recent improvements to the cooling pads have resulted in reducing water consumption from 3–7 tons per house per day to just 1 ton—a significant saving during peak summer months.
Local ideas, lasting change
Across TMEA, teams are showing how local action – whether it’s planting trees, rethinking transport, or harvesting vegetables – can lead to meaningful and lasting change that contributes to a healthier planet and a stronger future for poultry producers and communities alike.
