Sharing science-based practices in egg management and welfare, while celebrating local culture
CAMPINAS, Brazil – Aviagen® was pleased to join poultry leaders from across Brazil and around the world at the 2025 Foundation of Poultry Science and Technology (FACTA) and World Poultry Science Association (WPSA)-Brazil Conference, held Sept. 2–3 at the Sociedade Hípica de Campinas. As a diamond sponsor, the company took part in discussions on how innovation, welfare, and social responsibility can work hand in hand to strengthen the future of Brazilian poultry farming.
The program addressed key priorities for the industry, including salmonella control, antimicrobial-free production, incubation, microbiota in laying hens, and the use of automation, artificial intelligence, and data in health management.
Sharing knowledge on egg management
On Sept. 2, Antônio Carlos Amâncio, Aviagen’s Regional Supervisor of Technical Services in Brazil, spoke on “Egg management for hatchability.” He outlined best practices for handling eggs at every stage—from collection and transport to storage—to safeguard quality and improve results. “Every detail of management directly influences hatchability and the quality of the chicks produced,” he noted.
Advancing animal welfare
On Sept. 3, Tim Burnside, Global Vice President of Welfare, Sustainability, and Compliance, addressed welfare measures that make a practical difference for birds. He highlighted the importance of objective, results-based indicators such as foot health, comfort, and viability, which support continuous improvement and align practices with international standards.
“Welfare goes beyond the absence of pain and disease. It means providing proper nutrition, a suitable environment, and the ability for chicks to express natural behaviors,” he said.
Working together for sustainable progress
Ivan Pupo Lauandos, President of Aviagen Latin America, emphasized the company’s role in standing alongside producers and researchers to advance the poultry sector.
“Our priority is to be close to our customers and the wider industry, sharing practices that strengthen production efficiency, flock welfare, and food safety,” he explained. “This reflects our Breeding Success Together approach, where collaboration across the poultry chain helps drive sustainable progress.”
Promoting regional culture
In addition to the conference program, Aviagen supported a performance by the Viola Orchestra, part of the “Oficinas de Música Caipira” (Country Music Workshops) project, which the company has been involved with since 2017. The initiative benefits children and adolescents in rural communities of Campinas, offering free classes in traditional music and public performances that preserve and celebrate cultural heritage.
“Backing cultural initiatives is part of our responsibility and our connection to the communities where we operate,” added Lauandos. “These projects reflect values that are important to us: inclusion, education, and the preservation of local traditions. By combining innovation with social responsibility, we aim to help ensure a sustainable future for poultry producers and the communities they serve.”
